🚇 Public Transport Essentials
-
From the Airport:
Take the S1 or S8 directly to Hauptbahnhof (about 45 minutes). An "Airport-City Day Ticket" (€17.50) is available if you don't have a D-Ticket.
-
Official Apps:
The easiest way to get around. You can buy Day Tickets directly in the app:
Don't bother with the ticket machines; they often have long queues and can be a bit slow. The app is much easier.
-
Validation:
If you buy a paper ticket, you MUST stamp it in the blue machines before boarding. App tickets are pre-validated.
Before buying a ticket, check the distance. The city center (Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz) is very compact. I often find that walking is faster and much nicer than hopping on a train for just one stop. (I also recommend some great walking spots in the Essentials page).

💡 Should You Buy the Deutschlandticket?
- You are staying 7+ days.
- You are staying 4+ days AND doing a day trip (Salzburg, Alps).
- You have a Round-trip Airport Transfer (worth €35) + 3 days in the city.
- You are traveling to multiple cities in Germany.
- Your stay spans two calendar months (e.g., June 30 – July 2). You would pay for both!
- You are only staying in Munich for 1-3 days.
- You prefer walking or only plan to use the train 1-2 times total.
🎟️ A Good Trick: mo.pla Deutschlandticket
The Deutschlandticket is a flat-rate monthly pass for all local and regional transport across all of Germany. It's a lifesaver if you're here for more than a few days.
For travelers, a good option is using the mo.pla app. Most German apps need weeks of notice to cancel, but mo.pla lets you do it up to 24 hours before the month ends.
-
How to Access:
Choose your preferred way to use mo.pla (Web app is best if you can't find it in your store):
Note: The Web App version opens directly in your browser (you don't even need to download it).
Or check their official FAQ.
-
Purchase:
Buy the D-Ticket in the app (€63.00) via Credit Card or PayPal.
-
Cancel or Pause Immediately:
Once the ticket is in your app, you must act to avoid future charges.
⚠️ Critical StepHit "Pause" or "Cancel" as soon as you see the ticket in your app. Your current month stays valid, but you won't be charged again. Most people forget this and get charged for a second month!

⛰️ Regional Travel & Warnings
⚠️ Warning: Regional tickets (D-Ticket/Bayern Ticket) are NOT valid on high-speed trains (ICE/IC/EC).
-
Red vs White:
Stick to the Red regional trains (RE, RB) and the S-Bahn. Avoid the White high-speed trains (ICE) unless you have a separate ticket for them.
-
Key Destinations:
Use your D-Ticket for day trips to Salzburg, Neuschwanstein, or Lake Starnberg. (Find more inspiration in my Day Trips page).
