⛵ Lake Ammersee & Kloster Andechs
The ultimate Land & Water day. Start at the lake in Herrsching, hike to the "Holy Mountain" for beer, and finish with a sunset by the water.
Take the S8 toward Herrsching from the lower platforms at Munich Hbf. It's the final stop and takes about 50 minutes.
-
The Hike:
Follow signs for "Andechs." It's a scenic 45-60 minute walk through the Kienbach Valley forest.
-
Kloster Andechs:
Visit the Bräustüberl for a liter of Doppelbock and a massive pork knuckle (Haxe). Don't miss the Rococo church next door.
-
The Promenade:
Herrsching has Germany’s longest lakeside promenade (over 8km), lined with ice cream shops and cafes like Carlas Kaffeehaus.
-
On the Water:
Rent a pedal boat or take a nostalgic paddle-steamer across the lake to Dießen to see the Marienmünster church.
🏔️ Tegernsee: Beer, Boats & Peaks
Tegernsee is the "glamour" lake of the Alps; it's deeper and more mountainous than Ammersee, offering a true Alpine feel just an hour away.
Take the BRB (Bayerische Regiobahn) directly from Munich Hbf. Total travel time is about 1 hour.
💡 Pro Tip: The train "splits" mid-way. Ensure your carriage is marked for Tegernsee.
-
Bräustüberl Tegernsee:
The Helles here is considered by many to be the best in Bavaria. It sits right on the water.
-
Wallberg Cable Car:
Whisks you up to 1,722m for a panoramic view of the entire lake and the peaks of Austria.
-
Lakeside Path:
Walk the flat path from Tegernsee town to Rottach-Egern for high-end window shopping and mountain views.
🎻 Mittenwald: The Village of 1,000 Violins
Nestled right at the foot of the Karwendel mountains, Mittenwald is famous for its colorful painted houses and long history of violin making.
Take the RB train toward Innsbruck directly from Munich Hbf. Total travel time is about 1h 45m and it's fully covered by your Deutschlandticket. (I show you how to get it in the Getting Around page).
-
Leutasch Spirit Gorge:
A spectacular walkway suspended high above a rushing mountain stream. The "Ghost Path" is a must-do for nature lovers.
-
Karwendelbahn:
Germany's second-highest cable car takes you up to 2,244m. The views of the Alps are breathtaking.
-
Lüftlmalerei (Painted Houses):
Wander the town center to see the famous 3D-effect fresco paintings on the exteriors of traditional Bavarian homes.
🏰 Neuschwanstein: The Fairytale Castle
The classic choices. These are the places almost everyone visits, and for good reason—they are beautiful.
The inspiration for Disney's castle. It's the most famous building in Germany, perched dramatically on an Alpine cliff.
Take the regional train (RE or RB) to Füssen (~2h). From Füssen station, bus 73 or 78 takes you to the ticket center. All covered by the Deutschlandticket. (I explain how to get it in the Getting Around page).
-
Marienbrücke:
This suspension bridge provides the iconic postcard view of the castle. It's often crowded, but worth it for the photo.
-
The Alpsee:
A crystal-clear Alpine lake at the base of the castles. Perfect for a quiet walk or a quick break from the crowds.
-
Pro Tip: Booking
If you want to go inside, book your tickets weeks in advance. If they're sold out, the exterior and the views are still worth the trip.
🎶 Salzburg: Mozart & Mountains
Cross the border into Austria! Salzburg is a stunning Baroque city famous for Mozart, The Sound of Music, and its massive fortress.
Take the RE 5 train directly toward Salzburg Hbf (~1h 45m). Yes, your Deutschlandticket is valid all the way to Salzburg! (I show you how to get yours in the Getting Around page).
