🥩 The Schnitzel Guide
While the Wiener Schnitzel (veal) is technically Austrian, I think Munich does it better. The Münchner Schnitzel is unique because the meat is often brushed with a mix of sweet mustard and horseradish before being breaded.
-
Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger:
The upscale choice. A traditional tavern with high-quality Schnitzel and other Bavarian classics.
-
Andy's Krablergarten Cash Only:
The best "bang for your buck." The portions are generous.
💡 Pro Tip: Custom BreadingOrder the regular schnitzel with mustard or horseradish baked into the breading for the most flavor.
-
Steinheil 16:
The budget legend. Located in the university district (Maxvorstadt), it’s no-frills and serves a Schnitzel hanging off the plate.
🥨 Bavarian Breakfast (Weißwurstfrühstück)
This is the ultimate local ritual. Grab some Weißwurst (white veal sausage) with a soft pretzel, sweet mustard, and a cold Weissbier. Just remember the one rule: it has to be eaten before noon.
-
Augustiner Drei Mühlen:
A cozy, authentic neighbor spot that isn't in the touristy areas.
-
Rischart at Marienplatz:
Right in the heart of the city. Eating breakfast with a view of the Town Hall (Rathaus) is a classic Munich experience.
🍺 The Beer Garden Tradition
The Golden Rule: By law, you are allowed to bring your own food, but you must buy your drinks from the brewery. (Learn about the history of this in the Essentials page).
-
Augustiner Keller:
Very close to the hostel and Hauptbahnhof. It’s one of the oldest gardens in the city, and it's got a great vibe.
-
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm:
A famous spot in the English Garden.
💡 Pro Tip: KocherlballIf you're here in July, look out for the Kocherlball, an annual tradition where thousands dance in traditional dress at 6:00 AM.
-
Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz:
One of my favorites. It’s more local and less crowded, plus it's a great excuse to explore Haidhausen, which is one of the prettiest neighborhoods in the city.
-
Mini-Hofbräuhaus (English Garden):
A little spot in the northern English Garden. It is the only beer garden in the city open 365 days a year, making it a favorite local spot.
❄️ Pro Tip: A Snowy EscapeVisiting the Mini-Hofbräuhaus during a snowfall is a really nice experience.
🌶️ When you need a break from Schnitzel
Munich has good traditional food, but sometimes you need a break from the bread and potatoes. I love spice, and these are my go-to spots for Asian flavors in the city.
-
TAKUMI München (Gabelsbergerstraße 77):
Authentic Japanese ramen. The broth is so good, and their spicy miso ramen is a personal favorite.
-
Chi Tu:
Vietnamese street food. There are 4 branches in the city, but the one near Fraunhoferstraße is easy to reach.
-
Max Beef Noodles Cash Only:
Traditional hand-pulled Chinese noodles. I highly suggest the Curry Noodles, though everything is fantastic.
-
89Anju:
I love this place for Korean food. It's a fun spot with street food and snacks, perfect for groups. (P.S. If you're a fan, you can also ask me about any k-pop!)
-
Chaat Junction:
A great little spot near Isartor. Perfect for when you're craving something spicy.
🍟 Quick Bites & Late Night
-
Verdi Supermarkt:
Just a couple blocks from the hostel. Their Döner is incredible, one of the best in the city.
-
Türkitch:
They do modern kebabs with fresh herbs and good sauces.
-
Bergwolf:
The best place for currywurst and fries after a night out.
🌶️ Spice Level: "Brutal"Try the traditional currywurst with spice level "Brutal" if you can handle serious heat; otherwise, stick to the regular option.
-
Burgermeister (Münchner Freiheit):
A great choice for a budget burger. Schwabing is a great neighborhood with lots going on.
